Zovirax contains gelling agents such as gelling agents, which have the potential to cause irritation and redness of the affected skin, and is not indicated in children and adolescents under 14 years of age. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and scalp are caused by the varicella-zoster virus and are usually mild to moderate in severity. Varicella and zoster viruses can cause serious infections of the skin and scalp which can lead to serious complications. Cold sores are more common in children and adolescents aged 1 year and above. Zovirax contains propylene glycol, a glycerol monostearate, a polysorbate 80, a sucrose fast dissolving gel, a liquid paraffin oil and a blend of excipients, preservatives and essential oils. This cream is commonly used as a first-line treatment for cold sores in adults and in children under the age of 12. When children and adolescents enter puberty, their immune system is weakened and they have an inflamed skin (inflammation) called the varicella infection. Herpes simplex virus infections of the eye and ear (non-herpes zoster) can cause serious eye and ear problems in children and adolescents.
